Controlling Costs

John started his program with the intent of keeping costs down, in order to make surrogacy an afford-able alternative to private adoption. This page will give you an idea of the estimated costs of using our services.1

• Gestational Surrogacy:
The cost for gestational surrogacy, including all agency fees, attorneys' fees, and surrogate fees (but excluding medical costs) averages around $50,000.

• Egg Donation
The complete cost for egg donation, including legal fees, runs around $10,000-15,000.

1There is no way of accurately estimating in advance the cost of surrogacy. I have been told of people who have managed to have a baby through surrogacy for no charge whatsoever, other than the costs of IVF, with a carrier/friend who was not compensated for her services. On the other hand, I have heard of people who have spent over a quarter of a million dollars on numerous IVF procedures and a variety of different carriers and still not been successful. Nevertheless, most people, working with one carrier with one to three attempts at IVF should fit within these guidelines.

2 This will increase by an additional $60 if we are asked to have the MMPI screened for the egg donor.

3We suggest paying a first-time carrier $18,000, but we are flexible. First-time gestational carriers have been paid as little as $16,000 and as high as $25,000. Second-time surrogates have been paid at low as $20,000 and as high as $30,000.

4Some surrogates do not have insurance and will request a couple to pay for their insurance. We try to negotiate her fee down if that happens. But she may not agree. If she does not, it usually costs around $300 per month for these health insurance premiums. Surrogates may request other expenses as well including payments for amniocentesis, c-section or selective reduction if they happen and coverage for a travel companion if they fly for a transfer, etc. The couple may choose whether or not to accept the carrier based on her fees and expenses as well as any other factors they consider important.

5If a couple/single parent does not have a will, a simple will can be drafted to provide for guardianship and financial protection of the child should the couple/single parent die before the child is born. If they have a will that provides for children, none may be necessary.

6The Second Portion Agency Fee covers our continuing involvement. Once the agreement is signed and the IVF process begins, we are available to try to make sure that all parties show up for procedures and continue to work well together throughout the process.

7The IVF facilities we work with charge between $12,500 and $15,000 for the first IVF procedures. Medications generally cost around $4,000 for the egg donor and gestational carrier. If frozen embryos exist (which they usually do) second IVF procedures are usually around $2,500, with another $1,500 for the Carrier’s medications. Some facilities we work offer fees for three tries, but then offer 80% of the money back if not successful by the third try. There are also monitoring charges for the gestational carrier and the egg donor that generally run around $1,500 each. Generally speaking, Intended Parents should expect to spend between 20,000 and $30,000 for the entire set of screening (referenced in footnote 2), monitoring and IVF procedures.

8We usually do a bankruptcy and judgment check that runs around $45. We also require couples to speak to Lisa Berger before first speaking with their surrogate. Lisa charges $75 per hour for phone consultations. It is impossible to say with certainty what expenses may exist. If carriers or couples/single parents are out of town, there may be travel, hotels, or babysitters charges involved. In addition, overnights, faxes and cellular phone calls all add up. There are also additional fees of $4,000, plus the additional cost of $1,000 for her counsel if there is a need for a second carrier. In addition, the Agency will help the couple find an attorney to do a birth order or a termination of parental rights in the state where the Carrier is located. This usually costs between $1,000 and $4,000 (averaging around $3,000). Even if the Carrier is located in Massachusetts, this is still an extra charge.
